a guide to coffee shops in portland’s overlook neighborhood

portland neighborhood coffee shops series ☕

Up next in my Portland Coffee Shops series: the Overlook and Arbor Lodge neighborhoods! This part of Portland feels calm, quiet, and residential, and the coffee shops reflect that. They’re true neighborhood cafes–the kind of places you walk to on a slow morning, grab your usual, and linger a little longer than planned. Here are my favorites!

the stacks coffeehouse

Located in the heart of Overlook on Killingsworth Street, The Stacks is more than just a coffee shop–it’s also a library! Books line the shelves, inviting you to grab one and settle in while you sip your coffee. It’s a relaxed but lively space, with a mix of people reading, working, or just hanging out. It’s been busy every time I’ve visited, but never in an overwhelming way. My oat milk latte has always been consistently good. They serve Pastime Coffee, a Portland-based roaster focused on clean, sustainable sourcing and practices.

Side note: this is the very first coffee shop I went to alone when I moved to Portland, so it holds a special place in my heart. <3

Pastime Coffee

blend coffee

Blend is tucked just down the street from The Stacks on Killingsworth and has a much more low-key feel. The decor of the space leans industrial, with exposed brick and simple lighting, but still feels warm and welcoming. The baristas are extremely friendly, and my latte definitely hit the spot (I had an iced latte to celebrate the arrival of spring, haha). We also ordered a house-made berry pop-tart that I’m still thinking about weeks later. It was quiet when I visited, making it a great option for a slower morning or getting some focused work done.

madrona hill

Madrona Hill is the definition of a cozy neighborhood cafe. They serve coffee, pastries, and a full breakfast sandwhich menu, and they have a killer mocha–perfectly balanced and not overly sweet. The space itself feels homey, the kind of place you could easily spend a rainy morning reading for hours. They also have a walk-up window, which is perfect if you’re just grabbing something to go.

la perlita

La Perlita is a small Portland roaster focused on coffees from Central America. Their cafe on Interstate Ave is bright and modern with playful pops of color, but still feels approachable and not overly polished. The baristas were incredibly kind, and I ended up chatting with the owner about how diverse Portland’s coffee scene is.

I ordered the caramelized rosemary latte on a whim, and it completely worked—the rosemary added a subtle, savory edge that balanced the sweetness beautifully. It’s a creative, thoughtful drink that really made this spot stand out to me. 🙂

futura coffee roasters

Futura is a mid-sized Portland roaster with two cafes in town and a separate roastery. They place a strong emphasis on soil regeneration, even highlighting a striking stat on their website that at our current rate of desertification, we may only have about 50 years of viable topsoil left 🙁 I really admire their commitment to sustainability and the way they bring awareness to it.

Their Overlook location is calm, bright, and peaceful—the perfect place to ease into your morning. It’s the kind of spot where you grab a latte and a croissant, sit by the window, and take your time. Most people were quietly working or chatting, and the overall energy felt very mellow and relaxed. My latte leaned lighter, with fruity and floral notes, which I really enjoyed.

grindhouse (sexy) coffee

Grindhouse Coffee (aka “Sexy Coffee”) is a neighborhood staple. It’s a small, hut-like spot with a walk-up window and limited outdoor seating, but it’s always buzzing. This is one of those places people stop at during their morning walks (often with dogs in tow), and there’s almost always a line. They serve Extracto coffee, which I was excited to see since it’s one of my favorite roasters in the city so far.

Despite the small space, it feels welcoming enough to linger for a bit. The baristas were handing out dog treats to customers, which felt very on-brand for the neighborhood and honestly just made the whole experience even better.

Such a solid, underrated coffee scene in Overlook. Stay tuned as I keep working my way through Portland. There’s still so much to explore…
