A guide to coffee, wine & memorable days in portland & beyond

a guide to coffee shops in portland’s belmont district

portland neighborhood coffee shops series ☕

It’s been a crazy fall so far with harvest, but I’m back to share all the coffee stops in the beautiful Belmont neighborhood of SE Portland!

Southeast Portland is such an iconic part of the city, and I’ll be breaking it up into a few different neighborhoods because the coffee scene is so incredibly dense here. Belmont is located just south of Kerns and just north of Hawthorne, and it was so fun to finally start diving into the coffee scene in this part of town. There are so many unique shops packed into this little stretch of the city, each with its own personality and vibe.

Let’s get into it!

maggie’s coffee

Maggie’s is a coffee shop that shares its space with Company Wine Bar. Coffee and wine together… you KNOW I had to check it out!

The space is kind of garage chic, if that makes sense. It’s very open and beautifully decorated, with a large patio that is especially fun in the warmer months. I also met the owner, Maggie herself, who works behind the bar solo. I have so much respect for her starting her own business, and she has come out with some killer lattes!

I ordered the banana bread latte with oat milk and it was amazing. This place is all around a great vibe, especially if you want somewhere that combines a little bit of coffee, wine and community in one spot.

old friends

Old Friends has genuinely one of the best oat milk lattes I’ve had in Portland so far… which is saying something.

It’s a tiny shop tucked on the corner of the neighborhood, and it’s such a cute space. I’m also obsessed with their branding. Every time I’ve been, almost all of the tables are full. To be fair, there are only about five tables inside, but it has a buzzing little neighborhood energy that I really admire.

And the coffee is just phenomenal. They also have soft serve ice cream, which is a very fun bonus. I can definitely see why this place has such a loyal following.

annex

Annex is a true hub for the community in the area. I thoroughly enjoyed my visit there. The indoor space is spacious with lots of seating and a beautiful aesthetic, and they even have some outdoor picnic tables too!

There were lots of people there on a lazy afternoon, getting work done or chatting with friends. The baristas were incredibly friendly as well, which actually stood out to me as one of the most memorable parts of my experience.

I hung out for a few hours, got some work done and felt truly welcome in the space. It has that feeling of a neighborhood coffee shop where you can actually settle in for a while rather than just grabbing your coffee and leaving.

oblique coffee roasters

Oblique is one of the most unique shops I’ve been to yet, and in the best way.

The owner, Jack, actually saved the building, a 1891 Victorian Mercantile that was previously home to the Portland Circus Grounds, from being taken down and converted it into his coffee shop and roastery.

The building is gorgeous and truly a one of a kind historic space. There is so much to look at inside, with eclectic decorations throughout the shop. It seems like there’s also a solid group of locals who regularly buy coffee from the roastery, and the whole place has an extremely casual, lived in feel. Jack’s dog was even wandering around the shop and lounging about while I was there.

Add psychedelic rock playing through the speakers and you have a truly cool, unique space to hang out in. And the coffee is bomb.

never coffee lab

Never Coffee has made a strong reputation for itself in Portland, with its first location opening downtown.

The location on Belmont is very small, with a standing bar and only three tables inside, so it’s more of a grab and go space. Although, I managed to snag a table and sit for a while!

Never has such a unique aesthetic that I am absolutely in love with. It’s colorful, playful and completely unlike most coffee shops I’ve been to. The interior is painted with all the colors of the rainbow, and I am absolutely obsessed with their custom espresso machines.

The coffee is out of this world good, and the baristas were so friendly. I love this spot and would definitely recommend stopping by if you’re in the area.

benevolent (kind) coffee Cart

Benevolent Coffee, formerly Kind Coffee, is set up as a coffee cart just down the street from Never Coffee.

Again, it seems to be a very community focused spot, and I really enjoyed talking with the owner about her business! It’s the perfect walk up window for grabbing a coffee on the go, and they use beans from Umbria Roasters.

They also have an entire menu of killer breakfast sandwiches, so this would be a great spot to grab both coffee and breakfast before exploring the neighborhood.

puff coffee

Puff Coffee is owned by the same owner as Stumptown, one of the biggest names in Portland coffee.

It’s another roaster focused on small microlot single origins, and the small coffee shop is very modern and “hip.” It seemed like the place to be on a Wednesday afternoon when I went!

I really enjoyed seeing another side of Portland’s coffee scene here, especially with the focus on small lots and single origin coffees.

final thoughts

Everything about these coffee shops screams “Portland cool.” I genuinely had so much fun hopping around Belmont and checking out all the different personalities each coffee shop has. There are so many good spots packed into this little neighborhood!

I’m so excited to keep making my way through Southeast Portland and seeing what other coffee spots I can find! ☕
